I’ve been busy the last few days creating artworks that delve into Western iconography. The art works of ancient Greece and the Christian world are deeply ingrained in the psyche of Western culture. I am not Christian but I feel its influence in my world and my life. I often ask if there were angels, why do so many end up suffering? If there were a god, why would they allow terrible things to happen? These are questions that many of us ask, yet we are drawn to the art world of centuries past.
Much of Renaissance Christian imagery drew on ancient Greece for inspiration and was used in the colonisation of indigenous cultures. Christian European countries used to this imagery as a way of visualising themselves as superior. This continued for hundreds of years.
I paint these images and their iconography to question them.
I am exploring a few different projects at present. It feels great to be in the flow of creativity. I have also written about supporting The Weird & Wonderful World of Candice Black here.
